Plans to improve facilities for youngsters at Sidmouth school

A two-storey building will replace a pair of portable blocks at St John’s School in Sidmouth if a planning application is approved.

The development would create four new classrooms, a staff room, a storage area, toilets and a play area at the Broadway campus.

The proposals would benefit the nursery and the junior school, which are housed in two ‘port a cabin’ type buildings and what is believed to be the old headmaster’s house, respectively.

The plans say: “St John’s School has expanded in the recent past and is hoping both to further increase numbers and improve facilities for the current and future students.

“This proposal aims to provide bespoke and expanded teaching facilities for the nursery and junior school, in a new building which will be linked to the main school.”

Under the proposals, the site area will increase from 152 sq m to 770 sq m and the number of full-time equivalent staff will increase from six to nine.

East Devon District Council will decide the fate of the application.
