EDDC refused the plans today (Thursday, December 21).
Proposals to turn an Ottery pub into eight flats have been refused planning permission due to the impact on the town.
An application was submitted in 2015 to convert the Kings Arms in Gold Street into new homes, which involved a complete renovation of the three-storey grade II-listed building.
Refusing permission by delegated powers, an East Devon District Council planning officer said: “The proposed development would harm the vitality of the town centre shopping area and would be to the detriment of the community by virtue of the loss of a social gathering place.”
The officer also said the application lacked means of securing a required financial contribution towards a provision of affordable housing in the district.
