DRINKERS in the Sidmouth and Ottery areas have been told to leave their car keys at home if enjoying alcohol this summer.

Police want to reduce the number of booze and drug related collisions on the region’s roads.

Officers will this month crack down on those who put lives at risk by getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

“If you’re not fit to drive, then don’t even think about it,” the force has urged.

Those who might be impaired by drugs also face being checked.

Inspector Richard Pryce, force lead for Devon’s road policing, said: “Please think ahead and don’t risk putting your life or the lives of others at risk.

“As well as the potentially tragic consequences, someone who is caught drink driving faces losing their licence and, subsequently, their livelihoods along with the social stigma that a driving ban brings.

“The message to all motorists is very clear. Have fun, drink if you want to, but don’t drive. If you do, you will be caught and face a life-changing ban.”

Officers have also warned of the dangers of early morning drink driving when motorists are particularly vulnerable and forget about the dangers of booze.
