AFTER several car crashes in recent weeks, police are warning drivers not to take to the roads without simple preparations.

At this time of the year roads are often wet or icy and dark nights mean drivers have limited visibility which can lead to fatal accidents

Chief Inspector Chris Booty at Exeter said: "Drivers must ensure they have all round visibility before they set off - peering through a hole in the frost whilst waiting for the windscreen to clear is not acceptable and could lead to prosecution."

He said that glass and lights should be clean and dipped headlights should always be used in reduced visibility.

Chief Inspector Booty added: "Not every road is treated by gritters but wherever you are its safer to assume the road has not been treated and drive accordingly. In extreme weather ask yourself if your journey is really necessary.

"Devon and Cornwall Police try to encourage everyone to drive safely but for the few that ignore that message - the Courts are waiting.
