A BID to reduce the number of collisions involving large goods vehicles on Devon’s roads has been launched by police.

Operation Fatigue targets specific offences linked to the drivers of large lorries and coaches.

The ‘high visibility’ scheme will run for two weeks and will see officers in marked vehicles and on motorcycles patrol roads in an attempt to deter drivers from speeding and using mobile phones while at the wheel. Insecure or overweight lorry loads and motorists exceeding the limit of drivers’ hours will also be targeted.

Offenders face being fined.

Sergeant Rob Kelland from the constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit said: “We get a huge amount of international drivers in particular who think they can flout legislation and endanger the lives of others. This is unacceptable.

“We want to ensure our roads are kept safe and send out a message that we take these offences seriously.”
