The detective leading the investigation has praised onlookers and staff at the Black Horse, who performed first aid and prevented a suspect from leaving.

Detective inspector Gregg Dawe said: “People and staff in the Black Horse made excellent attempts at first aid and assisted police in detaining a suspect.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the pub staff in assisting us. We are working closely with them.”

Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of an assault at around 10pm last Thursday (September 26).

The incident was initially being investigated by 40 officers, who set to work reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing around 20 witnesses.

A police spokesman said: “This was an horrific incident for anyone who witnessed it and we appreciate the support we’ve had from the public for our enquiry.

“We understand news of this incident will be troubling for many in the Sidmouth area.”

An increased officer presence was offered the following day to reassure residents and answer any questions.

Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the incident to contact 101 and quote reference KS/13/554.

? Nicholas Jameson, 41, of Old Fore Street, appeared at Bristol Crown Court charged with murder on Tuesday and is expected to appear before judges again on October 17.
