POLICE are appealing for information after a Sidford resident returned home to find a man in her garden on Monday.

The man fled the scene, in Harcombe Fields, after the shocked resident dialled 999 at around 12noon.

Police officers, a dog handler and the force helicopter arrived promptly on the scene but the suspect had disappeared.

Sergeant Andy Turner praised the homeowner's rapid response in contacting the police. He said "This lady was on the ball, used 999 very quickly and we were able to get officers to the scene. She probably stopped a robbery happening."

The white male is described as Five ft 8 inches tall, around 35 years of age, slim, and was wearing blue jeans and black jacket or jumper

Police say the area has been victim to more burglaries than usual at this time of year, especially in unoccupied and insecure properties.

PS Turner has urged anybody leaving their property unoccupied to ensure somebody checks them regularly and takes steps to make it appear that someone is home. Residents should also ensure doors and windows are secure at all times.
