A SIX-HOUR search for a wanted man was conducted by Sidmouth police and dog handlers in the town on Wednesday.

The search was launched after a reported sighting of Simon Leo Berkowitz, 61, of Hove, East Sussex, who failed to appear in court last week to answer charges of going equipped to burgle.

A warrant was issued for his arrest by magistrates sitting at Central Devon Magistrates Court, Exeter, last Tuesday.

Sidmouth Police Sergeant Andy Turner said: "Our neighbourhood police team, in plain clothes, supported by the police dog section and covert teams, was in the Sidmouth area looking for this wanted man who failed to appear in court.

"He was sighted by a witness in Sidmouth, but after six hours of enquiries it appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
