A SIDMOUTH shop was allegedly hit by a 60,000 raid last week.

Police, who were on patrol in the town, responded to an alarm sounding at Goviers, High Street, at around 3.50am on Saturday.

A police spokesman said on arrival officers found the shop had been broken into and arrested three people at the scene.

Police said thousands of pounds worth of Royal Worcester and other items of china had allegedly been stolen.

The previous night, at around 2.55am, officers were alerted to a broken window at the same address and believe an attempt was made to gain entry.

Sergeant Andy Turner, of Sidmouth Police, said: "This was an excellent job by the officers involved. Within minutes of their arrival at the scene, they were backed up by seven other officers which included a dog handler.

"We have had an increase in staff which has had an impact on alleged crime in the town."

DC Paul Perryman, of Honiton Police, is leading the investigation.

Police confirmed three men have been charged with burglary. A 40, 21 and 43-year-old are due to appear before magistrates on April 14, police said.
