Underage drinking and criminal damage has forced the police to crack down on offenders 'besieging' Sidmouth's public spaces.

The warm weather and the end of the school term have seen issues escalate in Connaught Gardens on Friday and Saturday evenings, with youngsters damaging the toilet block and a phone box.

Officers will regularly patrol the area, and any other public gardens the youths may move use, to confiscate alcohol.

They will be using their section 27 dispersal powers to kick trouble-makers out of the town centre – and anyone who breaches the conditions will be arrested.

“Ever since the end of term and the good summer weather, we have been besieged by youths,” said Sergeant Andy Squires.

“We’re taking a tough approach.”

Officers are clamping down on underage drinkers and any adult who may give drink to an under-18.

Sgt Squires asked parents to keep a close eye on the drinks in their homes and what their children are up to.
