Police will be using social media to update visitors to Ottery’s Tar Barrels of safety issues at tomorrow night’s event.

The annual event attracts around 15,000 people to the town to watch the flaming barrels being carried through the streets, and the organising committee want visitors to enjoy the event without putting themselves or others at significant risk.

Officers will be using messaging service Twitter to update visitors who have access via their mobile phones.

The advice from the organisers is to listen to them and police, and not to try and touch the barrels.

They advise not bring young children to the event and warn visitors will only be allowed to park in designated car parks, and the town will be closed off to all vehicles a few hours before the start of the event.

Superintendent Glen Mayhew said: “This is an historic event that attracts thousands of people. We want all those who head to Ottery to enjoy the spectacle of Tar Barrels.

“It can be a fantastic night but due to the nature of the event there is obviously a risk and a danger posed.

“During the event please follow all the advice from organisers to ensure you and those around you have a good time and remain safe.”

The organisers will have a public address system on the night, and to see regular updates on Twitter from the police follow @DC_Police or alternatively search for hash tag #tarbarrels.
