Police target underage drinking during carnivals

Officers confiscated alcohol at Seaton and Colyford, and will do the same when the carnival comes to Sidmouth
Police will be clamping down on underage drinking during Sidmouth carnival.
They have posted on social media a photo of the alcohol confiscated from 14-17-year olds at the Seaton and Colyton carnivals this month, and will be doing the same in Sidmouth on Saturday, September 22.
Sergeant Andy Squires said officers dealt with a large number of drunken teenagers at Sidmouth carnival last year.
“They were having to look after a succession of comatose youths from about 10pm onwards, incapable of standing or looking after themselves and their personal possessions.

“This not only puts a child in a very vulnerable position, but ties a police officer up for a minimum of half an hour, until either a parent or an ambulance arrives.”
“Police were disappointed to hear from some of the youngsters that the alcohol had been given to them by their parents. The message is clear - if you are under eighteen and planning to take alcohol to a carnival, don’t bother!”
