A Sidmouth woman who helped to rehome thousands of dogs has celebrated her 106th birthday.

Gertrude ‘Topsy’ Hindley celebrated another milestone birthday last Friday (May 25) with friends and family at Arcot House.

Topsy founded Sidmouth Animal Welfare and Animal Rescue Centre, now known as ARC, in 1972.

Guy Scott, from the charity, said through her work Topsy saved the lives of many dogs.

He added: “In the early days of the society ‘ARC’ did not keep accurate records but since 1993 records show it has re-homed more than 2,000 dogs. Miss Hindley is a very special wise and compassionate person that people feel privileged to know.”

Anita Holder, registered manager at Arcot House, added: “She is lovely and really happy and smiley.

“The residents love her and always say hello when she comes out of her room.

“She has a lot of friends who come to see her.”
