WORKERS who helped keep Sidmouth's surrounding areas moving after Devon's worst snowfall in 15 years have been praised by council bosses and business leaders.
Last week, more than 100 county council and 315 South West Highways staff were mobilised to work around the clock to clear snow, using 84 gritters and snow ploughs, and 95 other items of highway machinery.
The extreme weather led to the closure of 130 schools and it is estimated the clean-up bill will top �1million,
Devon County Council leader Brian Greenslade said as a result, most major roads were passable within half a day and access to remote communities was restored within two days and thanked all those involved.
Tim Jones, chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Business Council, said: "The business community have universally praised the magnificent efforts. It is appreciated what an enormously difficult task this represents.
