Members of the public came to the aid of a motorist after he suffered a medical episode while driving his car at the weekend.

The man, who was in his 60s, was taken to hospital on Saturday after his blue Citroen left the road and collided with a wall on The Esplanade.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were sent to the scene around 1pm.

The man was given first aid by passersby before emergency services arrived.

He and a female patient were taken by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

An ambulance spokesman said: “A male patient was reported to be unconscious and not breathing. He was transported by road ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. A female patient was also conveyed by road ambulance to the RD&E with chest pain.”

Police recovered the vehicle and reopened the road at 4pm.

A police spokeswoman said: “The driver of the car, a man in his 60s, suffered a medial episode and was given first aid treatment by members of the public before emergency services arrived at the scene.”
