PUBLIC support could determine whether a non-profit community vegetable shop is opened in Ottery.

Sustainable Ottery (SO) has been exploring the idea of an outlet selling produce from local growers to the benefit of the town after traditional family-run greengrocer Wendy’s shut in April.

The Herald last week reported how residents will be polled over the idea next month after 21 people attended early talks in July.

Representatives from Exeter’s Community Enterprise Unit in Exeter, Talaton’s community shop and a local retailer and vegetable grower all turned out.

Member Jill Dixon said: “There were discussions about what was required to take the idea forward to make a successful community shop in Ottery.

“The main themes of these were shoppers, suppliers and competition with existing shops.

“It is hoped a questionnaire to gather the feelings of local shoppers will be distributed to local homes early in September.

“If there appears to be strong support for a community vegetable shop then further research will be undertaken to source local goods.”
