Quartet return to Sidmouth

Sidmouth is preparing to welcome back the Tippett String Quartet for an evening of classical music.

The group first played the Manor Pavilion in March 2011 performing Haydn, Mendelssohn and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.

Their next concert will be in Sidmouth Parish Church, on Saturday, March 17, with a programme of Wolf, Borodin and Beethoven.

Since forming 15 years ago, The Tippett Quartet have performed and recorded an eclectic repertoire from mainstream classical to contemporary composers, all of which has received critical acclaim.

Their Sidmouth programme will open with Wolf’s Italian Serenade, a single movement nocturne said to be ‘complete in itself’ even though Wolf had begun sketching a further two movements which were never completed.

The next piece is Borodin’s second string quartet in D and is probably the best known of the three he composed, largely because it was plundered for extracts for the 1953 American musical Kismet. The piece is described as having an endearing charm throughout, ending on a vivacious finale.

After an interval there is a single work, Beethoven’s op127 quartet in E flat, the first of his ‘late’ quartets.

This would have been the final concert of the season, but Sidmouth Music has announced the date of the rearranged concert featuring Leeds International Piano Competition winner Anna Tsybuleva.

The concert had to be postponed after the performer had passport problems but will give a recital on April 28.
