A stunning poppy quilt to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One is on show at Sidmouth Museum – but you need to move quickly to see it.

Aptly named ‘Every Stitch a Memory’, the colourful piece was created by members of craft group South West Quilters after they were approached by Exeter art teacher Adrienne Howells.

Adrienne, whose father fought in the war and survived, said: “I felt like I would like to honour in some way those who fought and fell in World War One.”

Other organisations were contacted for support by Adrienne, who also runs a touring exhibit showing a poppy themed banner and collection of individual works from her students.

Designed by Christine Badger and Val Thomas, the quilt was worked on by more than 50 craftspeople.

Each member of the Quilters was given a patch of fabric – complete with poppy cut-outs – on to which they could stitch their own design.

After finishing the ‘blocks’, the pieces of fabric were arranged and sewn together to create the quilt.

The quilt can be seen at Sidmouth Museum after a successful bid was made by Beryl McIndoe, who is in charge of costumes and textiles, to put it on show.

It will be displayed until 4pm tomorrow (Saturday) and then be moved on to another village.

The piece will eventually be handed over to the Royal British Legion and raffled, with proceeds going towards the legion’s funds.
