AN OTTERY taxi driver arranged a one-man protest this week to highlight his ongoing problems with drivers blocking his legal waiting space.Gavin France has been fighting to keep the spot on Mill Street free of traffic and delivery vehicles for three-and-a-half years. The space is reserved for the use of taxi's only however as it is next to popular shops in a town where parking is hard to find shoppers and delivery vans often use it.This leaves Mr France constantly having to stop and ask people to move on, something he says neither he nor the drivers enjoy.Mr France said: "It is still not resolved and I thought another demo was due."I have asked the policeman what action he was going to take about the frequent obstruction."I was told there was no need for more education and any reported infringements of the no stopping would be followed up and dealt with appropriately. He said: "However, it is still going on and it is no deterrent for people who repeatedly park illegally."I do feel let down."Mr France said he knows traffic wardens are thin on the ground prior to enforcement becoming a Devon County Council responsibility. And he has a small amount of hope that once it becomes a council responsibility the situation will improve. An Ottery police spokesman said: "We are aware of Mr France's ongoing concerns about this."We will treat any incidents as we would any other parking offence, with a mixture of enforcement, discretion and education.
