SIDMOUTH is gearing up to paint the town pink for Cancer Research UK.
On Friday, October 15, businesses will be staging pink-themed fundraisers as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Last year 40 businesses participated and raised £2,500. Lenny Titherington, who runs the Cancer Research shop in Fore Street, said this year’s target was £3,000 and she urged everyone to get involved.
She said. “Even by putting money goblets on their counters, businesses can help make a difference. Those that take part do a brilliant job, all fundraising in their own ways.”
Businesses come up with their own fundraising ideas, for instance hairdressers have shaved heads for donations. They can get pink t-shirts, balloons and other promotional material from the charity to boost their events.
Meantime, volunteers go out on the streets, dressed in pink and gathering support and donations.
“Lots of people go and buy pink wigs for the occasion,” said Lenny.
Cancer Research is the largest single funder of breast cancer research in the UK, giving nearly £44million toward it last year. Minnie Driver and Barbara Windsor have designed breast cancer awareness ducks. And actors Liam Neeson and Martin Clunes are this year helping the charity promote the fact breast cancer can also affect men. Lenny said: “There are so many people affected by it in one way or another, but not many people know it affects men too.”
Cancer Research community fundraiser Zilla Lavers has organised a Think Pink supper at Sidmouth Cricket Pavilion on Friday, October 22. Admission is by ticket only. They cost £10.50 a head, including supper. The evening includes a raffle and guests are encouraged to wear something pink.
Any businesses or individuals who want to get involved with paint the town pink can call (01395) 577203. For think pink supper tickets call Zilla on (01395) 514025.
