BEER Regatta Day went swimmingly during a successful Regatta week.

The sailing races, the main aspect of Thursday, August 12, attracted 13 cruisers from Axe and Lyme Regis yacht clubs and 14 Beer luggers. In a change to previous years, the dinghy races normally held that day happened the following Saturday. The aim was to attract more visiting dinghies, said Beer Sailing Club Commodore Ali Green. “It was a great success, and we’ll be building on that in future years,” he said. The winning cruiser was Morning Mist from Lyme Regis, skippered by Peter Fortnam; the winning lugger was Percy Mitchell, skippered by Ali Green. On the Saturday, Beer’s James Green, who is on the GB team for the World Laser Championships, won the Anchor Challenge Cup as 1st Laser. Andy Leslie and Sam Sparkes of Beer helmed the winning Mirror.

The other big attraction of the Thursday was the raft demonstration. It featured Doctor Who’s Tardis (best launch), and tributes to The Wurzels (best decorated), Thunderbirds and Toy Story. Thunderbirds’ Lady Penelope was praised for the best legs.

Event organiser and regatta vice-chairman Gayle Chapple said: “They all made a fabulous job of it; it’s fantastic the amount of time that goes into it.”

Fancy dress was also all the rage at the Dolphin Hotel’s al fresco dance on the Friday. Among the guests was a huge pair of flip flops; a shoal of mackerel and the Spice Girls.
