Residents in Sidford will be able to tackle reckless driving on their roads after a community speed watch initiative moved closer to becoming a reality.

Burscombe Lane and Windsor Mead on the A3052, on High Street, will soon be closely monitored by a team of six concerned villagers after recent data analysis prompted an action plan.

They will be trained and supplied apparatus to start monitoring passing car speeds, and report their findings back to the police station for further appropriate action.

PCSO Chris Bolsover and his colleagues monitored the area before Christmas and early this year, and he said their findings warranted action.

A device which measures driving speed continuously every day was also fitted on road at the end of January, and data has recently been analysed.

Mr Bolsover said the findings supported community speed watch move - and another road in Sidford will soon experience a similar practice.

“The team will be given access to one of the monitors,” he said. “They will go out measure driving speed on a given stretch of highway.

“The data will be submitted Devon and Cornwall Police and warning letters will be sent to the offenders.

“In order for this to have been set up, there needed to be a sufficient problem in the area. The data received from the monitor prompted such a move.”

The team will be trained by the police and could roll out as early as Spring.

Meanwhile, Sid Road in Sidford is in the beginning phase of speed recording after a resident brought the issue to the attention of the police.

Mr Bolsover said: “The first phase will be to see if it warrants a speed data recorder and if so, we will take it from there. The team will be carrying out regular checks.”
