Problems caused by potholes and dust on the road leading to Sidford’s rugby pitches have been solved thanks to combined council efforts.

Representatives from Sidmouth Rugby Club have thanked the authorities for resurfacing the only vehicle access route to its facilities - and say it is positive for community sport.

The work, funded by Devon County Council (DCC) and East Devon District Council (EDDC), will bring welcome relief to residents, who have been plagued with dust from the badly deteriorated road during dry spells.

Rugby club chairman Lester Willmington said: “As a club, we are very grateful that they have funded it.

“We were acutely aware that during extended dry periods the dust used to blow up into the houses of our neighbours and that problem has now been solved.

“I think everybody using the facilities will welcome it.”

Resurfacing work involved constructing a 65-metre tarmac access road to the parking area.

DCC provided recycled road plainings, free of charge, and EDDC covered the cost of laying them along the edge of the access road to mitigate the rise in level.

County councillor and highways boss Stuart Hughes said: “This is a great example of councils working together to resolve what had become a nuisance.

“Hopefully, this new tarmac surface will restore the quality of life of local residents, as well as benefiting those who use the pitches.”

The secretary of Sidmouth Rugby Club, Terry O’Brien, said: “It does make life easier getting in and out of the pitch car park. The road surface before quickly deteriorated into a series of potholes, so it is definitely a great improvement in terms of vehicle access.”

Councillor Iain Chubb, EDDC’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “In times of economic constraint and budget cutbacks, it is important that we make use of recycled materials.

“It is also important that we are encouraging people to participate in sport and improved access to an excellent local facility, such as the rugby club, can help do this.”
