MONEY to conduct a safety audit on the narrow section of Temple Street, Sidmouth, will be provided by the town's county councillor.Councillor Stuart Hughes will provide funding from his Devon County Council locality budget for a priority scheme to be drawn up to solve conflicts between motorists and pedestrians at the spot, close to Sidmouth police station and access to Lawn Vista. At this point the road narrows, giving little room for larger vehicles to pass one another. There have been instances where drivers have mounted pavements to get by.Mr Hughes said there were also problems with speeding and he felt a priority system, with build-outs, would make the road safer for all users. He said: "The work which I am funding is preliminary, drawing up a scheme and for a safety audit to be carried out."The scheme, if agreed, will then be considered for implementation some time in the future. "I have had numerous concerns expressed to me, both from residents and pedestrians, about the danger that exists and I fully support their concerns. That is why I am providing the funding for this scheme to be drawn up. "I only hope that at some stage it will reach fruition before a serious incident occurs.
