DRIVERS heading into Ottery on the Sidmouth Road were left in a jam on Tuesday when a bus and lorry became stuck on the stretch.

The two large vehicles had tried to pass each other between Tipton St John and Wiggaton when they reached an impasse, causing traffic to swell on either side of the standstill for nearly half an hour.

Helen Back, 26, from Sidmouth had taken the route to avoid road-works near Sidbury before when events transpired in front of her.

She said: "I was behind a huge lorry when it met a bus coming in the other direction. Neither wanted to budge and they got stuck trying to get past each other. The lorry driver was refusing to reverse as he was adamant it was his right of way.

The traffic was going back as far as I could see. Everyone had turned off their engines and had got out of their cars. What can you do in that situation?."

"After about half an hour the lorry finally managed to get past only for us to meet another similar size truck straight away. Luckily that one managed to reverse into a field just enough for us to get through."

"After that fiasco I decided to try my luck getting through Sidbury to get home and believe it or not I got straight through.
