A project to transform part of Connaught Gardens into a rose bed of remembrance needs donations to help make it a reality.

Sidmouth’s branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has revealed plans to replant the small plot with roses, to honour all those from the area who served in the armed forces since 1914.

Chairman Dave O’Connor said: “Once the roses have been established, they will be there for a number of years. During the course of the year, thousands of people will see it - it is in such a popular spot.”

The district council has already agreed to allow the RBL to use the patch, but before the scheme can go ahead, donations are needed to fund the purchase of the roses.

The idea for the garden was brought to the RBL by resident John McGregor, who suggested the town should feature one after seeing a similar project in Dartmouth. To support the appeal, call Dave O’Connor, RBL branch chairman, on 01395 516160 or send cheques made out to ‘RBL garden remembrance’ to Glenstall, Sid Park Road, Sidmouth, EX10 9BR.
