The Rotary Club in Ottery presented a Christmas gift of more than 2,000 to a Royal British Legion appeal following a sailing trip.
Four of its members sailed around the Devon and Cornish coast in August to raise money for injured service personnel.
They were skippered by Chris Highnam, who in 2010 organised another charity sail which made more than 20,000 for Help for Heroes.
So last year he assembled a crew to embark on another voyage, this time for the Poppy Appeal, and Ottery’s Rotarians decided to help their fellow member try and raise another great total.
So just before Christmas the Rotary Club of Otter Valley and its Santa’s Sleigh presented Chris with a cheque for 2,100.41 to the ‘Sail4Poppies’ appeal, adding to a further 5,000 earlier handed to the legion.
The team, including Keith Spittlehouse, a past-president of the club, Mick Hopkins the group’s treasurer and former Royal Air Force officer Roger Hutchings, left from Exmouth on a 38ft offshore yacht to visit 15 harbours on a journey to Bristol.
