SAINSBURY'S wants to open a town-centre supermarket in Ottery St Mary.
The supermarket giant said it met with Ottery town council on Thursday to reveal that its desire to submit a planning application for a new store in the town, on land adjacent to the town centre car park in Hind Street.
The proposal will include a 20,000 sq ft store and free car parking for shoppers who want to visit the store and town centre traders.
Jamie Baker, Sainsbury's regional development executive, said: "We hope to submit plans for a town centre store that will stock enough products to cater for a weekly shop, with free parking and in a location that will make it easier for shoppers to support Ottery's independent traders as well.
"We plan to speak to representatives from other local groups during the next few weeks before holding an exhibition setting out our proposal in more detail to local residents in the New Year."
More details about the proposals will be revealed at an exhibition in the New Year. The date and venue for the exhibition will be confirmed during the next few weeks.
