THE Church of St Mary and St Peter in Salcombe Regis has launched a search for ‘friends’ for the first time in its history.

The move has been made to ensure the church survives and is well maintained for future generations to enjoy and use if they so wish, writes Kingsley Squire.

The Friends of Salcombe Regis Church was launched this week to invite support from those who care about the preservation and survival of the historic landmark.

“Few would wish to see these ancient buildings fall into disrepair and eventually become a ruin regardless of whether or not they are worshippers,” said a group spokesman.

“Yet the maintenance of the fabric and surrounds of our churches comes at a price which is often difficult for our congregations to sustain and that, unfortunately, is the case with this little church which has stood in this beautiful sheltered valley for 900 years.

“It’s irrelevant whether you use the church for worship or only on an occasional basis or are a non-believer. All that matters is that you care about the future survival of this historic church building.

The group will have its own committee and treasurer, separate from the parochial church council, and members will receive reports on the use of their resources with every major project approved at an AGM before fabric and maintenance work is carried out.

Funds are raised through an annual subscription of from 10 for adults with life membership at 200 or 250 joint.

Organisations and businesses are welcome as corporate members for 25 a year.

For further information contact membership secretary, Linda Harris, on 01395 516624 or chairman, Philip Atkinson, on 01395 512193.

The spokesman added: “We are simply its stewards for a short time before handing on that stewardship to others and it would be reassuring to know that in the years to come the church bells could ring out over the valley as they have.”
