An Ottery businesswoman has been left ‘gobsmacked’ after winning her first ever award from Taste of the West.

It is the first outing into the competition for the Samosa Lady of Ottery who claimed gold in the casual dining category.

Owner Tina Chauhan-Challis was given the name when she moved to the town and started selling at the town’s community market.

She opened her shop in Broad Street nearly four years ago and has been holding dining events showcasing the best of Indian cuisine.

During the event, diners are treated to a four course meal cooked from scratch by Tina. Guests do not order from a menu but are presented with the dish and an explanation of the region and cuisine from Tina herself.

Tina said: “I was gobsmacked, it was absolutely amazing as it was the first time I have enter the competition.

“I’m not a chef. As a child I was brought up to cook with my parents and grandparents.” It’s not just an experience, it’s an education about the different regions of different foods.”

The win has inspired Tina to submit her produce, including her homemade pickles, which she makes from scratch.
