Sidmouth pupils learn about sustainable Fair Trade tea production in Kenya
It was a long time brewing, but Sidmouth Primary School and Sidmouth College pupils finally had their Fair Trade Workshop in June, after the original event in March had to be postponed because of the heavy snow.
Thirty Year 5 and Year 6 children visited Sidmouth College, where they joined Year 7 students in a conference and workshop sponsored by Sidmouth Fair Trade Group. They were able to see real tea plants, growing in pots, and find out how the leaves are harvested and processed, all the way from bush to cup, in Siret, Kenya, by a Fair Trade company which also provides education, health facilities and clean water for the local Kenyan community.
Then it was time for the children to have a cup of tea, sampling the Kenyan Chai style as well as the better-known black variety.
The visit, run by Devon Development Education, also included group activities and poster making.
