Sid Valley Food Bank has been helping to support families and individuals for over eight years and this month it is celebrating having been granted charity status.
The news means that in time they will be able to manage finances more efficiently and claim Gift Aid, amongst other benefits.

In a statement from the food bank, food bank coordinator Chris Chapman said: “The trustees are delighted to announce that on February 2 Sid Valley Food Bank became a registered charity. Thanks are due to Trustee Michael Mortensen who put in a lot of the work to achieve this.”

As the food bank is over eight years old the application process has given trustees the opportunity to review and clarify its objectives, policies, responsibilities and the constitution.
“As a result, there may be small changes in the way we operate, but the main objective, to help people in crisis by providing food, will continue,” Chris said.
“As a registered charity, the food bank will be required to report annually to the Charities Commission to show how they are meeting their objectives and spending donations.” He added.

The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown restrictions has had an effect on operations at the charity headquarters in Sidmouth Youth Centre, Manstone Lane. However, plans are already in place for when lockdown starts to be eased.
“The Covid pandemic has caused the food bank to reduce some activities during the past year, including arranging drop-in advice and support for clients by other specialists, but volunteers are now planning for the end of restrictions with some new projects to support clients in various ways, including energy advice, budgeting and practical help (such as cooking on a budget).
