Are you looking to make a difference in your community? If so, then the 1st Sid Vale Scout Group is looking for you.

Across the country, 50,000 young people are keen to join the fun and adventure the organisation offers – but there are not enough volunteers to run the activities.

The thriving Sid Valley group is no different and, now with enough six- to eight-year-olds to start a second beaver colony, the leaders hope to reach people with a wide range of talents.

Group chairman Gareth Hughes said: “We have been very fortunate over the years to attract some wonderful leaders who have delivered really exciting activities for the youngsters in this valley.

“We are thrilled with our new scout centre and now need to tap into a wider range of people with the skills to help run our facilities and make sure that we make the most of the opportunities.

“There are people out there who will now be interested in supporting us – in many different ways – and we can offer tonnes of support in return.

“Whatever your skills and availability, there will be some way you can contribute - meaning our young people will get even more from the experience of scouting.”

The group, established in 1913, is looking for people who can help with such things as:

• Administration - eg taking bookings and sending out invoices;

• Managing kit - a good, old-fashioned quartermaster is needed to keep equipment in good condition and available for use;

• Communications - keeping everyone up to date with what the group is doing using its website, Twitter, Facebook and the Herald;

• Building maintenance;

• Grant applications;

• Field maintenance.

Gareth added: “We’re looking for people wanting to give something back to their community and can find you a role whatever your skills – whether that is behind the scenes or working directly with our young people. No experience in scouting is needed - we can train you.

“All volunteers need to have a DBS [criminal record] check and we will arrange this at no cost to you.”
