Sidbury artist Liz to Walk the Walk for breast cancer in New York marathon event

A SIDBURY artist is downing her brushes and brushing up her walking skills in preparation for the New York Walk the Walk marathon on November 6.

But before she leaves, Liz Belither, of Ebdon Farm, Sidbury; who paints under the name of Liz Vonberg, is holding a fundraising 60s to 70s disco at Sidbury village hall, on Saturday, October 8, with music from retro DJ Jerry A Trick (Andy Webb), in aid of Uniting Against Breast Cancer.

“Andy buys a lot of old pop records from Potburys and has quite a collection,” said Liz, 56, who hopes people will come suitably attired in retro gear.

The disco is on from 8pm until midnight and the 8.50 tickets – available from Drews the butchers, (01395) 597373, or by calling (01395) 597748 – include 70s party food.

There will also be a prize draw and prizes for the best male and female outfits. Bar profits will go to Sidbury village hall committee.

Liz did two Moonwalks for breast cancer charity in London in 2006 and 2007, prompted because she knows several friends who were seriously affected by the cancer.

“I feel it is something that they are going to have a breakthrough in preventing and early detection is really coming on well. This is something that women should support wholeheartedly.”

It is her first walk in New York, which follows the route of the marathon held the same day.

“You have to power walk 4.5 miles an hour, so I am increasing my training to 20 miles this weekend.”

Liz, who admits to being “scared stiff” of having to walk across all of New York’s windy bridges, plans to visit several of the city’s art galleries while there.
