Fire fighters were called out to a large fire out in the open at Sidbury Hill last night (Friday) for what turned out to be a five hour shout.

The Sidmouth crew arrived at 7.20pm to find a large unattended bonfire that was estimated at around 40 metres in size.

It contained unburnt wood and rubbish and the crew used foam to knock it back and prevent it spreading to a large thatched house nearby.

At 8.50pm they called for backup and asked for an extra fire engine, so the Honiton crew attended together with the telehandler from the Urban Search and Rescue Station at fire headquarters.

The fire was finally extinguished just after midnight.
