Sidford teen catches out Sri Lankan skipper on England cricket debut

The Sri Lankan under-19s captain was caught out by a Sidford teenager making his international cricket debut last week.
Dom Bess was selected for the England under-19s team and, while they lost the match at Wormsley, he said it was a great experience.
The 19-year-old started his career at Sidmouth Cricket Club aged seven, following a family tradition, and now plays for Exeter, Devon and Somerset.
“We lost, but it was a really good experience,” said Dom, an off-spinning all-rounder.
“It was everything I thought it would be and more – I didn’t really think how good Sri Lanka are. We had quite a big task. It was a good competition.”

The tourists had seemed on course for an impressive total when Dom caught out their captain, Charith Asalanka.
“That was a proud moment,” said Dom. “It was quite a hard catch – it was almost a reaction. It was what we needed at the time, it was a bit of a morale boost.”

England went on to be beaten by Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the first match of the Royal London One-Day Series.
The sides played again on Saturday and England suffered a ‘massively disappointing’ second loss by a narrow margin – so the tourists took the series.
Dom received his first cap off former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, the ECB’s director of cricket. He enjoyed another first on Tuesday when the last match of the series was featured on Sky Sports.
