Despite pouring rain, driving forces behind a 40,000 transformation at The Ham were swamped by excited youngsters last Wednesday.

Nearly 400 votes were cast in a poll over three potential developments at the site.

The Herald can reveal designs by play company HAGS (pictured) got 273 nods of approval - nearly five times as many as its nearest rivals.

Adults, children and young people turned out in force to have their say over the facility - and to enjoy a fun day at The Ham.

The playground re-vamp is a joint effort by town and district councils and parents.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of people,” said Jamie Buckley, community engagement and funding officer for East Devon District Council, on Wednesday.

Around 150 youngsters painted tiles that will form a massive mural on a once bare wall at Bagwell’s Fish Shop.

Delighted organisers Coco Hodgkinson and Louise Cole hailed everybody who helped out and took part. They said the event was a massive success and are looking forward to finishing off the wall project.

“Everyone who took part will be recognised for their contribution ,” said Louise. “The mural really will be a community art-piece.”

Sidmouth Town Council will decide whether to endorse the public’s play area choice.
