A fun day at the seafront spot proved a smash-hit last Wednesday as wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of hundreds of youngsters.

Downpours left the bouncy castle deflated but didn’t have the same affect on scores of families who turned out in force to vote over the play revamp and enjoy games and face painting among other activities.

More than 400 people turned out for the consultation.

A once bare wall at Bagwell’s Fish Shop will be transformed into a piece of community artwork as more than 140 children painted tiles for a huge seascape mural.

The Herald reported last week how Ham designs by play company HAG netted 71per cent of play area votes.

The firm’s vision included adding climbing rocks, a basket swing, tall spinning item and zip wire.

Jamie Buckley, the district council’s community engagement and funding officer, said: “The whole project has been an amazing example of how local parents can work with the town and district councils to make things happen.”

Between September and December, parents and district council officers worked with 82 children at four schools in Sidmouth to find out how they prefer to play.
