HEALTH and safety fears have sparked local authority waste bosses into reminding Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary residents that food collections are made in the towns on a weekly basis.
While East Devon District Council (EDDC) has praised the "fantastic response" of householders since changes to rubbish collections were made in June, it is claimed some residents are still lumping leftovers with landfill waste, collected fortnightly.
An EDDC spokesperson said: "The aim of the weekly collection of food waste was to avoid unpleasant smells and mould, caused by decaying food.
"The situation is exacerbated by some householder not wrapping their food waste in newspaper or special biodegradable bags when placing it in the indoor food caddy.
"This practice not only increases the chances of smells in the neighbourhood, but is also a health and safety concern for the collection crews.
