First-ever show attended by 350 people

VROOM vroom! Classic car enthusiasts were bowled-Rover by a Sid Valley first on Saturday.

More than 350 people enjoyed around 50 cars of various ages and manufacturers that filled a rally field near the Blue Ball, Sidford.

Driving forces behind the area’s first-ever classic car show hailed it a ‘tremendous success.’

The day also raised 260 for a pair of charities.

Organisers Graham Guest and Ian Hartnell of the P4 Driver’s Guild Devon, who both own vintage vehicles fro the 1960s, were among those to offer rides in their four-wheeled pride and joys.

“Everyone was surprised that 17 of these cars were actually from the Sid Valley itself,” said Sidmouth resident Graham.

“Tom Griffiths’ 1927 Austin 20 ‘Toastrack’ is of course, well known in the town but for Colin Seward’s 1950 Ford Prefect and Andrew Argyle’s 1936 Austin 10 ‘Doctors Car’ it was the first time out to a rally.

“Some 350 people attended and each had the opportunity to vote for the car that was, in their opinion, the best in show. Brian Pengelly of Paignton won with his 1973 Renault Alpine 110 former competition car.

“There was a lovely, friendly atmosphere and both the Devon Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes charities have received 260 each from the proceeds. The Guild are extremely grateful to all those who attended or contributed in any way to make this first show such a success.”

Graham thanked Blue Ball owners Linda and Roger Newton for allowing use of their land.
