THERE were smiles, cheers and tears today as Sidmouth College students celebrated after collecting their long awaited A-level and AS results.
The overall pass rate at A-level was 96 per cent, with 40 per cent of pupils gaining A and B grades-similar to last year's figures.
A-level student Charis Mckenna, 18, was rejoicing after gaining an A in Food Technology, B in Business Studies and a B in PE.
She gained a place at Bath University where she will be studying Coach Education and Sports Development.
She said: "I feel brilliant. It was hard work but it really paid off."
Headboy Tom Chaplin gained three Cs in his A-levels and will now go on to study PE at his first choice, Chichester University.
Victoria Mclennan-Wiggin achieved fantastic A-level results gaining two As and two Bs.
The 18-year-old is hoping to study at Bath University but as she needed three As she will have to wait a few more days to find out if she has a place.
If Victoria does not get into her first choice she will study at Sheffield University.
Other high-flyers include Lisa Southwell who achieved an A and two Bs and Leah Harrison who achieved an A and two Cs.
College principal, Jeremy Roberts, said he was delighted by the results and congratulated the students on their hard work and praised staff for their professionalism.
He told the Herald: "I really want to pay tribute to the commitment and determination of the students and to thank those who are leaving for their contribution to the life of the college over the last seven years. It is also important to thank all staff of the college for the sustained professional effort that has contributed to these results. The key ingredients in this success are the commitment of students, the professionalism of staff and the support of parents. We now wish all those students who will be leaving us this year every success in the future and we trust that they will look back on both the academic preparation and the personal development that they have experienced with the confidence to take on any future challenge."
He added: "It has been a very exciting year. We have moved from having a school notice to improve from Ofsted to gaining a glowing report in May saying we are rapidly improving."
Although there are fears university students will not get on to a degree course because of a surge in people applying for places, Mr Roberts said he had not seen any examples of this in Sidmouth College.
He said students who go through clearing may be affected but there are many other ways for youngsters to progress into further education.
AS level results were similarly impressive and the overall pass rate was over 90 per cent with 40 per cent achieving A and B grades.
Tess Pearce, 17, gained three As and a B in her AS exams and will continue her A-level studies at the college.
She said: "I'm really chuffed. I tried really hard so I'm glad I got the results I wanted."
Georgia Reading achieved two As and a B, Charlotte Hall was celebrating after gaining an A, two Bs and a C and Dan Weedon scooped two Bs and two Ds.
Staff governor Sue Hurley said: "The students worked extremely hard and deserved the grades they achieved. We're really pleased and proud of all the kids."
