Sidmouth College pupils enjoyed a hands-on history lesson after getting up close to one of the country’s largest Roman coin collections.
The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter organised a workshop at the school for year seven pupils to see first-hand the Seaton Down hoard.
The collection of more than 22,888 Roman coins were found by Laurence Egerton in 2013 and it is the fourth largest Roman hoard ever found.
As part of the Roman Roadshow, the pupils simulated being on an archaeological dig, handled coins and met a Roman re-enactor.
The school was a supporting stakeholder of the acquisitions and has helped to develop a partnership with the museum to celebrate the return of the find to Devon.
Chris Trengove, co-ordinator for humanities, said: “Year seven students have been so lucky to explore this extraordinary find - it has really brought the local history of Roman East Devon to life for many of our students.
“The college has been grateful of the partnership developed and the opportunities that the Royal Albert Memorial Museum has been able to provide for the students.”
