Young people are set to benefit from ‘exciting’ modern and ‘improved’ classrooms as part of new proposals from Sidmouth College.
The school is holding a public consultation next week to showcase the plans, which will replace one of the site’s original buildings. It has secured funding after Devon County Council submitted a bid on its behalf to the Priority Schools Building Programme back in 2014.
In 2015, the bid was green lit and work began to assess if the block would be rebuilt or refurbished.
Sarah Parsons, Sidmouth College principal, said: “Everyone at the college is so excited to see the plans for our new school and we hope that our community will share our excitement.
“The young people of Sidmouth deserve to be taught in bright, modern classrooms and our community will benefit from improved facilities to hire for meetings, classes and events.”
The new building will consist of one three storey and one two storey block joined in an L shape.
On the top floor of the three storey building will be a new modern science suite with a large central preparation room.
History, geography and religious education and music will move to the new build, which also include practice rooms and a recording studio.
On the ground floor, there will be a technology workshop, offices and stores, new kitchens and dining spaces for students.
In the adjoining building will be a double height school hall with retractable seating, an activity studio and a reception area. The staff room and other offices will also be house in the two storey blocked.
The current building, which has been on site since it opened in the 1960s, will be demolished to create a central grassed quad seating area with further plans to create an external dining area sheltered by sail canopies.
Following feedback from the public, contractor Bouygues UK will then submit an application.
The exhibition and public consultation will take place in the school hall next Thursday (October 18) from 4pm to 7.30pm.
Contractors, architects, engineers and representatives from the Department of Education will be at the consultation answer questions.
