A DISPLAY showcasing Sidmouth Cricket, Tennis, Croquet and Hockey Club’s role “at the heart of the community” hit town library visitors for six this week.
An information stand at the Blackmore Drive hub was deemed such a success that staff there decided to extend its run by another week.
Launched on Monday to promote the club and its activities to boost membership numbers, the display will remain in place at Sidmouth Library until next Saturday, April 9.
“Our town prides itself in being able to provide excellent sporting, social, cultural and leisure activities,” said club committee member David Thorneley.
“In this regard Sidmouth Cricket, Tennis, Croquet and Hockey Club is considered by many to make a significant contribution to the overall life of the community.
“Sport has been played on the magnificent grounds for nearly two hundred years and everyone who comes to the Fortfield is guaranteed a warm welcome when entering the wonderful and historic thatched pavilion.”
The General Management Committee of the club is made up entirely of volunteers- the majority of whom are local residents.
Four sporting sections are supplemented by a social membership category.
The Friends of Fortfield stages a year-long social programme and has raised substantial amounts of money to help with the cost of maintaining the club’s famous pavilion.
“The club takes real pride in identifying and developing sporting talent, from the younger generation, with regular supervised coaching sessions for juniors,” added Mr Thorneley.
“A good example of this is the Junior Tennis Section which, since its launch in October 2008, now boasts a membership of more than 70.”
He said that number was likely to increase when a floodlighting project comes to fruition this year.
First assistant at Sidmouth Library, Meriel Santer, said: “We’re pleased to be able to advertise local clubs and societies.”
The club, in Fortfield Terrace, will hold ‘open’ tennis section sessions tomorrow (Saturday, April 2) from 11am to 12noon and 3pm to 4pm.
