A SIDMOUTH Councillor turned DJ has launched a campaign to rocket a John Lennon classic to the top of the Christmas charts.

Bay FM’s Stuart ‘Huggy’ Hughes hopes to get Lennon’s yuletide hit Happy Christmas (War Is Over) to number one for the first time.

“We have had enough of X Factor taking over the charts and there are so many reasons for getting John Lennon, a true musician and artist to number one,” said Stuart, who has been playing festive music since June on his Sunday afternoon Jukebox Show.

Lennon would have turned 70 this year. December 8 marks the 30th anniversary of his murder by Mark David Chapman in New York in 1980.

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) reached number four in the UK singles chart in 1972. The song was re-released shortly after Lennon’s death and peaked at number three.

“With the world in such a war-torn state, it has never been a better time to remember this song, and in doing so, celebrate the genius of Lennon,” added Stuart.

He has urged listeners to download the song from music websites, but to hold off until December 14.
