Sidmouth Fire Station responded to two shouts last night (Thursday June 1) and has issued a warning about Himalayan Salt Lamps.

Sidmouth firefighters were called out twice last night (Thursday) to separate incidents on the Esplanade and at a care home.

Crews were first called out at 7.25pm on June 1 after reports of a bin on fire on the Esplanade.

A pair of fire engines were sent to a care home at 10.45pm following concerns of a burning smell.

A crew from Ottery St Mary and a flexi-officer also attended.

A fire service spokesman said: “The smoke alarms had activated and staff called 999 due to the smell. As it was a large building with lots of elderly residents a pump from Ottery St Mary and a flexi officer were also mobilised.

“A search of the effected zone was carried out and the smell had possibly come from a Himalayan Salt Lamp. There has been a recall of lots of these lamps so this one has been removed. If you have one at home or work please check its not on a recall list.”
