Sidmouth FolkWeek got off to a flying start with two legends of word and song at the Marquee on the Ham.

Roger McGough, the Liverpool beat poet, brought his mix of wit and wisdom with Little Machine providing musical accompaniment. The encore saw him revisiting his sixties musical career with The Scaffold and the singalong classic Lily the Pink.

The festival opening concert was a first visit by Fairport Convention, the band credited with launching folk rock.

The band celebrated their 50th anniversary last year and have their own long-established festival in Cropredy, Oxfordshire. Foujding member Simon Nicol explained they hadn’t been before because they don’t usually play any other festivals. The line-up includes another long-time member Dave Pegg. But all the band have previously been to the festival either to play or to enjoy the fun.
