A MISSING plaque commemorating one of the co-founders of Sidmouth Garden Club has been unearthed.

It is a mystery how the plaque, in memory of Ronald Lines Boyce, came to be in the garden of Powys House on All Saints Road but it is believed it could have been there for years.

John Wright, vice president of Sidmouth Garden Club, was contacted by a Powys House resident, who fittingly found the plaque when he was doing a spot of gardening two weeks ago.

It has now undergone a rigorous clean and has been added to the three-fold display in Sidmouth Museum, which has been set up in celebration of he club's 60th anniversary.

The plaque was originally presented by Sidmouth Garden Club following Mr Boyce's death in 1984 and was first housed at the Ham next to a commemorative bush.

Mr Wright believes it was then moved to Blackmore Gardens because the bush was vandalised.

He said: "As far as I can remember, this is going back four or five years, there was a trellis with climbing roses and that was the last I'd seen of it."

The display, featuring Darwin, geology and garden club memorabilia is on exhibit at the museum in Church Street from Monday to Saturday. Admission is free.
