A NEWLY installed Zebra crossing at Stowford Rise, Sidmouth, is one of only two of its kind in Devon.

Its two black and white poles are illuminated as well as the orange beacons, and have been installed at the persistent request of Sidmouth/Sidford Devon County Councillor Stuart Hughes.

He said: "It is a lot more striking than the normal type and draws drivers' attention to the fact there is a crossing there."

He told DCC it had set a precedent by installing an illuminated zebra crossing in Great Torrington and said he would like to see this type of crossing in Sidmouth.

"I think in road safety terms they will certainly prove that they are worth looking into in other locations."

He said road safety officers for DCC would keep a close watch to see how effective the poles were in drawing drivers' attention to pedestrians waiting to cross the road.
