New Sid Valley Patients Forum leaders hope to swell its numbers and recruit a wider range of committee members after ‘significant changes’ to its structure.

A GROUP set up to represent residents who value Sidmouth Health Centre has asked the town: ‘Are we looking after you?’

New Sid Valley Patients Forum leaders hope to swell its numbers and recruit a wider range of committee members after ‘significant changes’ to its structure.

The forum, made up of a small group of voluntary patients who act as an interface between the health centre and those who use it, wants to hear from residents ranging from teens to young mums to pensioners.

The group, which was always chaired by a senior practice partner until June 1, has appointed an independent chairman for the first time- to become ‘more autonomous’.

Organisers hope the change will help them ‘respond even more effectively’ to the needs of patients.

New chairman, Primrose Dodd, will be assisted by a deputy, Paul Whitehouse, and a committee of up to 20 people.

Speaking on behalf of doctors, the practice manager, and all group members, Mrs Dodd said: “Forums are going to be at the forefront – the voice of the people.

“Once again, the NHS is going through a period of change and restructuring, with many issues being scrutinised as never before, and many challenges being presented which must be overcome.

“Patients’ views and experiences are being placed high on the agenda with constant reference to their choice, voice and responsibility.”

Mrs Dodd told residents: “No decision will be made without you,” and added:

“The initiatives being driven by the NHS will focus heavily upon independent forums like the Sid Valley Patients Forum in the hope that the practitioners – the whole team – are on a common agenda delivering a 21st century medical service to the community in an appropriate environment.”

The forum meets approximately every four weeks for around an hour-and-a-half.
